(R1, R2, & R3 year) The clinic is a 2-block walk from Providence SHMC and a 4-block walk from DMC. Both the Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Residency outpatient facilities are housed in this ambulatory center. The R1 spends one half-day per week and the R2 and R3 residents spend two half-days per week in the continuity clinic. All residents also have an ambulatory rotation in the clinic for 4 weeks with R1s working half-days and R2 and R3 residents working full days. Residents follow their own patients longitudinally throughout the course of their training and thus have the opportunity of establishing relationships that are such an important part of the outpatient medicine experience. The IMRS clinic is designed to help our residents acquire the skills they need in the future, whether they become hospitalists, primary care internists or subspecialists. The clinic is an opportunity for residents to learn to prioritize the evaluation and management of chronic disease as well as the acute conditions that arise in the lives of our patients, to become familiar with implementing preventative medicine guidelines and to educate patients and manage time efficiently. The faculty preceptor’s time in the clinic is dedicated to teaching residents. We do not exceed a ratio of one faculty per four residents. We have outpatient teaching sessions every morning prior to seeing patients, using an academic case-based curriculum presented by faculty, focused topics presented by specialists and residents. Our Ambulatory Clinic is also home to the HIV Clinic. Residents have the opportunity of taking care of patients with HIV/AIDS jointly with our HIV Specialist. During their ambulatory rotation, the senior ambulatory residents also spend clinic time with the Infectious Disease specialists seeing Hepatitis C, with a psychiatrist doing consultations for our clinic patients, with a dermatologist (include procedures) and with a podiatrist. We use Centricity, an electronic medical record, in the clinic and have excellent training sessions for our new residents as well as superb on-site support. Our RNs and LPNs provide empathetic, efficient care to our patients. The nursing staff provides years of skill and experience (as well as the ever needed sympathetic ear) to our residents. |
