Residents are required to research and present a topic to the faculty and their peers at a noon conference. R2s prepare a Grand Rounds and R3s prepare an Osler lecture. Faculty is assigned to assist the resident in topic selection, research gathering and organization of their ideas into a focused and concise presentation. The Washington chapter of ACP [American College of Physicians] sponsors a competition for residents of the four Internal Medicine training programs in the state. Each IMRS senior resident prepares an abstract about an interesting case [generally a patient they have cared for personally] or a research project. The abstracts are judged and several are chosen for an oral presentation to the ACP group. The presentation winner receives a prize and the opportunity to present at the annual national ACP conference. In addition, the four programs have a robust competition as they play medical Jeopardy. Again the winning team goes on to the national ACP meeting.Residents are also encouraged to submit papers for publication or presentation at national meetings. Should a paper be selected for presentation, the program assists with travel expenses and grants time away from the program.Research interests that have led to authorship of published articles by members of our clinical faculty include:- Blood culture techniques and the rate of false-positive results
- Interventions at teaching sessions to promote resident learning
- Tumor necrosis factor inactivation in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis
- Protease inhibitors for treatment of HIV
- Endoscopic ultrasonography and biopsy for pancreatic tumors
- Therapeutic biliary endoscopy
- Implantable cardioverter defibrillators for ventricular arrhythmias

- Preserving renal function in patients with hypertension and diabetes
- Urinary albumin and insulin as predictors of coronary artery disease
- Endovascular stents for renal artery stenosis
- Diabetic nephropathy
Residents also participate at ACP meetings with relevant clinical material derived from their own cases. Here are presentations they have given:- Primary melanoma occurring in a mastectomy radiation field
- Osborn waves on ECG in a patient with sepsis-induced hypothermiaQuinine-induced pancytopenia
- Subdural empyema
- Lemierre's syndrome (internal jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis)
- Legionella lung abscess and pericarditis

- Myocardial involvement in Henoch-Schonlein purpura
- Meningoencephalitis caused by NSAIDs
- Brain abscess as first sign of asymptomatic pulmonary AVM
Residents at all levels have the opportunity to pursue individual research or collaborate with faculty on existing projects. We also have the opportunity to work closely with the Providence Heart and Vascular Institute and the Spokane WWAMI branch of the University of Washington School of Medicine on the Washington State University Spokane campus. |
