On Call

We have a different approach than the typical "every fourth night" system. We have four-week block rotations called Night Shifts. Residents assigned to the Night Shift rotation work a Sunday through Thursday schedule from 6:00 pm to 7:00 am.  Friday and Saturday nights are covered by residents on rotations such as electives or ambulatory. 

During the Night Shift rotation, residents are excused from attending didactic noon conferences. We provide them web access to the lectures which we tape using a system called Mediasite.

We believe there are significant advantages to the Night Shft system:
  • The Night Shift resident concentrates 20 "nights" of call (that previously were scattered throughout an academic year) into a single block without having daytime responsibilities.
  • Continuity of patient care improves by having the resident familiar with ICU and house staff patients for the month.
