Medical Students

University of Washington School of Medicine, WWAMI Spokane, First-year Medical Students
It is nothing new to have medical students training in our program. For the past 19 years, we have had third- and fourth-year University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) medical students doing their clinical training in Spokane. What is new is that the University of Washington has expanded to Spokane. The inaugural class of 20 first-year medical students began in August, 2008. The students have their basic science courses at the WSU Riverpoint campus one mile from our medical centers. The first-year curriculum also involves learning to do patient interviews as part of their Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) course led by one of our faculty.

This new program also has monthly Grand Rounds for medical students. Our residents and faculty are involved in introducing the students to clinical reasoning skills by presenting cases relevant to the basic science topics of their curriculum.

Third-year Clerkships
Four to six students per quarter do their core internal medicine clerkship (outpatient and inpatient) with our program. Housing is provided by the University for their students. On a space available basis, students from LCME or AOA accredited medical schools may apply for 3rd year clerkships. To do so, email Program Coordinator Teri Yaeger regarding the application process.

Fourth-year Clerkships
Our prime responsibility is to provide electives and clerkships for 4th year students from the University of Washington. Electives include:
cardiology
gastroenterology
infectious disease
pulmonary medicine

They can also take subinternships in general medicine. These are 4-week rotations.

Students from Other Medical Schools
Once we have completed enrolling our own fourth-year UW students, we welcome students from other LCME or AOA accredited medical schools. Student housing is available in a dormitory style setting on a space available basis. Parking is provided free for medical students.

Fourth-year students from U.S. medical schools can request an application form via e-mail or by phone. The clerkship application packet lists the requirements that need to be met before approval is granted.

Foreign medical students should email Program Coordinator Teri Yaeger regarding the application process.
